Having Time to Travel.  If I can only crack the code to achieve it.

I love reading pieces that help get me motivated.  This article from the BBC regarding the new wave of professionals learning to embrace the digital nomad lifestyle, is the ultimate goal for me and I am about to embark on a journey to plan for the full disconnect.

Reading articles and stories of others who have walked down this path is definitely motivation for me.  The whole things about "If they can do it, why not me?" always runs through my mind.

My wife is game and the little one is still in a stage where she won't care.  We love the idea of slow travel and be able to experience the world.

I needed to start formulating a plan to get from point A to point B and this is where the idea of Digital Nomad Diary came to fruition.

Hopefully, me and my family's journey, challenges, mistakes and successes can help you as motivation and learn from the adventure we are about to take.

MY LIST, MY DIARY:
I started compiling a list of ideas on what are important to me and my family before making the leap.  It's not quite as an easy transition now as if I was a young buck; ready for backpacking life, hostels and able to take higher risk than me.   Now I have to worry about strollers, baby bottles and making sure I don't lose the favorite blanky.  I'm 39 years old with a wife and 19 month old (as of now) and would like to think of securing a future without having to work until I am in the mid 60's.

Key goals I have are:

  • Financial Stability
  • Early retirement.
  • Travel on the cheap.

Small steps matter so I plan to set aside some time everyday to plan towards this.  2015 will be the year that I will try to set a path to make these dreams come true.

So in this blog, I've created several categories to help document what our experiences are on the road to becoming a digital nomad; hence the name Digital Nomad Diary:

1. MONEY MATTERS:
  • This section will be to highlight any of my money related articles that I pick up.  Things that pertain to sound money management and designing my early retirement strategy.
  • I've developed a love for personal finance as this truly is the key to early retirement and I plan on adding them here.
  • One of my goals is learn how people earn money on online businesses this year.  I know there's a lot of ways out there but I have no clue.
  • I want to be able to do all of this travel but I also do not want to sacrifice our plans for our older years and also crack the code on how interneters have made passive income through the web.
  • I am doing my fair share of late night reading and have found so many virtual mentors.

My goal is to focus on our personal budget, trim the fat of excess spending and figure out ways to put decrease our monthly expenses to be able to put more money for retirement.

2. TRAVEL MILES.
  • If I am to be a Digital Nomad, I will need to make sure we have the resources to travel.
  • For me who is very financially conscious, I will need to figure out how to be able to travel without breaking the bank.
  • Again, with much reading and research, I was able to discover Travel Hacking.
  • "Travel hacking" is working to accumulate airline or credit card miles, points or elite status for free travel or as cheap as possible.
  • This is somewhat new to me, I will capture my experience in this section and any nuggets of knowledge that I learn to you.

3. INSPIRATION
  • Collect memories and not things.
  • In this part, I'll add any inspirational articles, pictures or quotes that will help me push on.

4. NOMADIC TOOLS
  • Having the ability to work remotely, I'd like to keep a good record of what tools have worked best for me for my day to day life.
  • I'd like to share any reviews and gadgets that are necessary for me to be efficient on my road to becoming a digital nomad.

When I look at the above, I sit and wonder if it's a crazy idea but I think it will mainly boil down into planning.  Sure it's a hard task but I don't think it's impossible.  I really believe that as long as I know what my goals are, then it's just a matter of figuring out how to get there.

So it's time to learn and begin filling out my diary.

Is that really a crazy idea?  What is your motivation?  What changes did you have to do in your life to pursue the digital nomad dream and make it a reality?  I really would love to hear everyone's insight as we are all here to learn.
